Beautiful Blue - Mudcrutch

The shadows from the footlights made you fifty foot tall
I watched you as the music bounced around the hall
You called me in the morning and sent your car for me
I stumbled as I kissed you dropping ashes in your tea
I wanna wrap you up in a beautiful blue
I wanna wrap you up in a beautiful blue
I wanna wrap you up in a beautiful blue
I do, I do
Around you there’s a color
A shade unlike the rest
You’re laughing and you’re easy
The way I know you best
I wanna wrap you up in a beautiful blue
I wanna wrap you up in a beautiful blue
I wanna wrap you up in a beautiful blue
I do, I do
Gonna move outside the city
I know some friends out there
In a tree with painted bottles
Watch the sun dance on your hair
I wanna wrap you up in a beautiful blue

Tony Blair needs to read this one…

“The Drums Of War” - Jackson Browne

Roll out the drums of war
Roll up the cover of the killing floor
Roll out the drums of war
And let’s speak of things worth fighting for
Roll out the drums of war

Time comes when everything you ever thought you knew
Comes crashing down and flames rise up in front of you

Roll out the drums of war
Roll back the freedoms that we struggled for
What were those freedoms for?
Let’s not talk about it any more
Roll out the drums of war
Roll out the drums of war
If you know what your freedom’s for

Whatever you believe the necessary course to be
Depends on who you trust to identify the enemy
Who beats the drums for war?
Even before peace is lost
Who are the profits for?
And who are they who bear the cost
When a country takes the low road to war

Who gives the orders, orders to torture?
Who gets to no bid contract the future?
Who lies, then bombs, then calls it an error?
Who makes a fortune from fighting terror?
Who is the enemy trying to crush us?
Who is the enemy of truth and justice?
Who is the enemy of peace and freedom?
Where are the courts, now when we need them?
Why is impeachment not on the table?
We better stop them while we are able
Roll out the drums of war
Roll out the drums of war
If you know what your freedom’s for

Whatever you believe the necessary course to be
Depends on who you trust to identify the enemy
Who took this country to war?
Long before the peace was lost
Who are the profits for?
And who are they who bear the cost
And who lay down their lives?
And who will live with the sacrifice
Of our best and brightest hopes,
The flower of our youth,
Of freedom, and the truth?

“Far From The Arms Of Hunger” - Jackson Browne

Far from the arms of hunger
Far from the world disorder
Beyond the reach of warfare
Blinded by faith no longer
No longer free to plunder
No longer safe to rule
A world no longer ours alone

Where people walk in wonder
And speak to one another
And recognize as brother
The face across the border
Across a sea of differences
Across the drifting sands
The joining of our hands in time

When will we find
We can no longer look away
When will we mind
The killing in our name each day
When we decide
That all our might just weighs us down
Then will we find
The means to turn our world around

When will we find
When will we mind
When we decide
The means to turn our world around

Far from the arms of hunger
Far from the world disorder
Beyond the reach of war
There is a world where we belong

“The Power Of The Heart”
(originally by Lou Reed)

You and me we always sweat and we strain
you look for sun and I look for rain
we’re different people, we’re not the same
the power of the sun
I looked for treetops, you looked for caps
above the water, where the waves snap back
I flew around the world to bring you back
ah the power of the heart

you looked at me and I looked at you
the sleeping heart was shining through
the wispy cobwebs that we’re breathing through
the power of the heart
I looked at you and you looked at me
I thought of the past, you thought of what could be
I asked you once again to marry me
the power of the heart

Everybody says love makes the world go round
I hear a bubbling and I hear a sound
of my heart beating and I turn around
and find you standing at the door
you know me I like to dream a lot
of this and that and what is not
and finally I figured out what was what
it was the power of the heart

You and me we sweat and strain
the result is always the same
you think somehow we’re in a game
the power of the heart
the power of the heart

I think I’m dumb I know you’re smart
the beating of a purebred heart
I say this to you and it’s not a lark
marry me today
You know me I like to dream a lot
of what there is and what there’s not
but mainly I dream of you a lot
the power of the heart
the power of the heart

It was Frances birthday yesterday. For various reasons we have had a tough time recently. So, between drinks and me being our DJ this was plucked from the ether. I love her to bits.

’Poetry’ - Ray Davies 2017

I just got back from a walk down the square,
to the local Kentucky
To see what was cookin’ down there
I looked around at the store
and the signs and the queues
lining up for that 21st Century fare
I kneel down and say grace for the comforts the world bestows on me.
And the great corporations providing our every need
and those big neon signs telling us what to eat
In every shop window goods are designed to please
But I ask where’s the poetry
The day we met we were both down and broke
but we laughed and found comfort
in old books and walks in the rain
and reading poetry out loud
and watching old black and white films together
in the days before Blockbuster came
I hear you ran off and found yourself a rich handsome fellow
to supply you with all you require
your materials needs
I hope your fairy tale doesn’t end tragically
and in a shopping mall somewhere
you’ll be down on your knees
crying out loud where is the poetry?
I’m looking at the sign that says “have a good day"
But I got too much on my mind so many questions that get in the way
Everybody’s looking for perfection
But once I heard a wise man say
to get sometimes, you have to give away
I have read in the news someone say
that the great population is better off
than yesterday
better health, better food, better sex, and better higher education
but with the credit card bills always on the way
And I just saw my girl with a guy in a fast-food outlet
They seemed happy together but I saw the tragedy
Maybe I’m missing something
Was too blind to see
She settled for someone who isn’t so hard to please
Without all the fire of desire and the mystery
but I ask where’s the poetry”

"The Hard Way" - The Kinks

Boys like you were born to waste,
You never listen to a word I say
And if you think you’re here to mess around,
You’re making a big mistake,
'Cos you’re gonna find out the hard way,
You gonna find out the hard way.

No matter what I do or say,
You’re much too dumb to educate.
One day life’s going to turn around and slap you in the face,
Then you’re gonna find out the hard way.
You’ll take the hard way,
Gonna take the hard way.

Well, you’ll do it your way and I’ll do it my way,
And we’ll see who’s the one to survive.
You’ll find that with no foundation
Or qualifications
There’s no way that you can get by,
No, there’s no way you can get by.

Why don’t you take the easy way?
Why don’t you co-operate?
Don’t just sit there and vegetate.
Do you want to end up illiterate?
You think that life’s a vacation
And you’ve no inclination
To dust away the cobwebs of your mind.
Now it’s time for confrontation
And I’m tired of being patient,
So I’ve got to be cruel to be kind.
Yeah, I’ve got to be cruel to be kind.

I’m wasting my vocation teaching you to write neat
When you’re only fit to sweep the streets.
Your intellect is such
That it requires a killer’s touch.

So I’m going to play it your way,
We’ll take the hard way.
Going to take the hard way,
You can take the hard way.
Gonna take the hard way,
Gonna take the hard way.

Rock N Roll Cowboys - Ray Davies

Rock n’ roll cowboys where do you go now?
From the final shootout at the OK Corral
Do you give up the chase like an old retiree?
Or do you stare in the face of new adversaries
Night falls the coyote calls underneath a full moon
"Heeyah" is the final call at the Last Chance Saloon
Your time’s passed, now everyone asked for your version of history
Do you live in a dream, or do you live in reality?

Rock n’ roll cowboys on the ol’ wagon train
You had your time but it won’t come again
You rode the prairie and ya’ always stood proud
So tall in the saddle and your head was not bowed
Night falls the coyote calls underneath a full moon
"Heeyah" is the final call at the Last Chance Saloon
Your time’s passed, now everyone asked for your version of history
Do you live in a dream, or do you live in reality?

Where are the natives who come to our aid in our hour of need
And where are the great ones to lead us through battle to a victory
Got so many questions, so little time but it’s still a mystery
Do we live in a dream, or do we live in reality?

Night falls the coyote calls underneath a full moon
"Heeyah" is the final call at the Last Chance Saloon
Your time’s passed, now everyone asked for your version of history
Do you live in a dream, or do you live in reality?
Do you live in a dream, or do you live in reality?

’Where The Rose Is Sown’ - Big Country

We’re at war All the papers say
We will win I read today
We are strong It wasn’t us
We are right Who started this?
Leave your work I just left school
Leave your home I am no fool
Take up arms It left me strong
Sound alarms The school bell rings

Sons of men who stand like gods
We give life to feed the cause
And run to ground our heathen foe
Our name will never die
This time will be forever

Join up here I wave goodbye
We need you Oh my breast sighs
Have no fear I must try
God will be with braver men
Take the vow I know its right
Praise the flag The good fight
We’re at war I’m on my way
We will win Why do I pray?

Sons of men who stand like gods
We give life to feed the cause
And run to ground our heathen foe
Our name will never die
This time will be forever

I wait here in this hole
Playing poker with my soul
I hold the rifle close to me
It lights the way to keep me free
If I die in a combat zone
Box me up and ship me home
If I die and still come home
Lay me where the rose is sown

Sons of men who stand like gods
We give life to feed the cause
And run to ground our heathen foe
Our name will never die
This time will be forever

‘Into My Arms’ - Nick Cave And the Bad Seeds

I don’t believe in an interventionist God
But I know, darling, that you do
But if I did I would kneel down and ask Him
Not to intervene when it came to you
Not to touch a hair on your head
To leave you as you are
And if He felt He had to direct you
Then direct you into my arms

Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms

And I don’t believe in the existence of angels
But looking at you I wonder if that’s true
But if I did I would summon them together
And ask them to watch over you
To each burn a candle for you
To make bright and clear your path
And to walk, like Christ, in grace and love
And guide you into my arms

Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms

But I believe in Love
And I know that you do too
And I believe in some kind of path
That we can walk down, me and you
So keep your candles burning
And make her journey bright and pure
That she will keep returning
Always and evermore

Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms, O Lord
Into my arms

I love that song and the lyrics really hit the spot.

Think this is brilliant. Some songs cross the line into pure poetry and you could pick any number of them from this album.

Tom Waits - “The Ghosts Of Saturday Night (After Hours At Napoleone’s Pizza House)”

A cab combs the snake,
Tryin’ to rake in that last night’s fare,
And a solitary sailor
Who spends the facts of his life like small change on strangers…

Paws his inside P-coat pocket for a welcome twenty-five cents,
And the last bent butt from a package of Kents,
As he dreams of a waitress with Maxwell House eyes
And marmalade thighs with scrambled yellow hair.

Her rhinestone-studded moniker says, "Irene"
As she wipes the wisps of dishwater blonde from her eyes
And the Texaco beacon burns on,
The steel-belted attendant with a ‘Ring and Valve Special’…
Cryin’ “Fill’er up and check that oil”
“You know it could be a distributor and it could be a coil.”

The early mornin’ final edition’s on the stands,
And that town cryer’s cryin’ there with nickels in his hands.
Pigs in a blanket sixty-nine cents,
Eggs - roll 'em over and a package of Kents,
Adam and Eve on a log, you can sink 'em damn straight,
Hash browns, hash browns, you know I can’t be late.

And the early dawn cracks out a carpet of diamond
Across a cash crop car lot filled with twilight Coupe Devilles,
Leaving the town in a-keeping
Of the one who is sweeping
Up the ghost of Saturday night…

Love this…

“I Can’t Wait To Get Off Work” - Tom Waits

I don’t mind working, 'cause I used to be jerking off most of my time in bars,
I’ve been a cabbie and a stock clerk and a soda-fountain jock-jerk
And a manic mechanic on cars.
It’s nice work if you can get it, now who the hell said it?
I got money to spend on my gal,
But the work never stops, and I’ll be busting my chops
Working for Joe and Sal.

And I can’t wait to get off work and see my baby,
She said she’d leave the porch light on for me.
I’m disheveled and I’m disdainful and I’m distracted and it’s painful,
But this job sweeping up here is gainfully employing me tonight.

Well “Tom, do this” and “Tom, do that”, and “Tom, don’t do that”,
Count the cash, clean the oven, dump the trash,
Oh your loving is a rare and a copacetic gift,
And I’m a moonlight watch manic, it’s hard to be romantic
Sweeping up over by the cigarette machine,
Sweeping up over by the cigarette machine…

I can’t wait to get off work and see my baby
She’ll be waiting up with a magazine for me.
Clean the bathrooms and clean 'em good, oh your loving I wish you would
Come down here and sweep a-me off my feet, this broom’ll have to be my baby,
If I hurry, I just might get off before the dawn’s early light.

Just love the way Tom paints pictures with his words and creates stories

There’s no original video for this, someone just made one. But after the shitty afternoon I had, it was just the right video for me, just like a breath of fresh air.
And I love this girl’s voice.

I think I’ll go for a walk
Cause it’s a nice day for it
Tune out the talk
Take a breath and start again
And where I’ll go, oh, I don’t know
The path will show, oh, oh

The grass gives a scent
Memories I forget
Air clears my mind
And suddenly I find
So much hope, oh, oh
Thrown around, oh, oh

Don’t want my life passing me by
But I got time to make things right
I wanna feel, I wanna feel my life

The light on the knees
Reminds me of my dreams
Oh, these simple things
Better than anything
The sun sinks low, whoa, oh
And I just let go, oh, oh oh

Don’t want my life passing me by
But I got time to make things right
I wanna feel, I wanna feel my life
I wanna feel, I wanna feel my life, yeah

Don’t want my life passing me by
But I got time to make things right
I wanna feel, I wanna feel my life
I wanna feel, I wanna feel my life
I wanna feel, feel, feel, feel
I wanna feel, I wanna feel, ah, feel, ah
Feel, ah, feel, ah, ah, ah, ah
I wanna feel my life

Oh god, don’t we all have those feelings! Nice. Enjoyed that.

“Memphis” - The Milk Carton Kids

There was a dream
I had it too
You could see it coming true
It would travel in the air
You could make it if you dared

But now the sun goes down over Dolly Parton bridge
The one time home of soul takes our country’s final breath

I guess it takes
More than a man
More than a dream
For such a fight

Graceland is a ghost town tonight

This ain’t a trip with my son
There’s no guitar shines in the sun
Those days are gone
May new ones come
Before it’s all just a museum

But now the sun goes down over Dolly Parton bridge
The one time home of soul takes our country’s final breath

I guess it takes more than a king
More than a song for such a fight

Graceland is a ghost town tonight

I guess it’s been a long decline
God bless the souls that shook up mine

Graceland is a ghost town
Tonight

The Ghosts That Haunt Me - Crash Test Dummies

There’s a skeleton in everybody’s closet
I can think of one or two in my own room
But I would like to introduce them both to you
You’d shake their boney hands and so dispell the gloom

'Cause you’re so kind
I know you would not mind
You’d send away the ghosts that haunt me now
And the things I fear
Just wouldn’t seem so near
And when I stroll out late at night
There would be nothing rattling at my heels

There are nights when all my aching bones won’t let me sleep
And demons come to plague me as I lie in bed
But I know if you were sleeping there beside me then
That you could fend them off and they would let me rest

'Cause you’re so kind
I know you would not mind
You’d send away the ghosts that haunt me now
And the things I fear
Just wouldn’t seem so near
And when I stroll out late at night
There would be nothing rattling at my heels

There are nights
When the wind comes howling through my old place
I have dreams
And I wake up with the sweat pouring down my face
And I wait till the morning comes

There will come a time I fear when all my days are done
And they will come collect my corpse and bury me
But I hope that you’ll come over to the Other Side
To join me in our new life, keep me company

'Cause you’re so kind
I know you would not mind
You’d send away the ghosts that haunt me now
And the things I fear
Just wouldn’t seem so near
And when I stroll out late at night
There would be nothing rattling at my heels

From his most laid back album.

Wake up Time - Tom Petty

You follow your feelings, you follow your dreams
You follow the leader into the trees
And what’s in there waiting, neither one of us knows
You gotta keep one eye open the further you go
You never dreamed you’d go down on one knee, but now
Who could have seen, you’d be so hard to please somehow
You feel like a poor boy, a long way from home
You’re just a poor boy, a long way from home
And it’s wake up time
Time to open your eyes
And rise and shine
You spend your life dreaming, running 'round in a trance
You hang out forever and still miss the dance
And if you get lucky, you might find someone
To help you get over the pain that will come
Yeah, you were so cool back in high school, what happened
You were so sure not to have your spirits dampened
But you’re just a poor boy alone in this world
You’re just a poor boy alone in this world
And it’s wake up time
Time to open your eyes
And rise and shine
Well, if he gets lucky, a boy finds a girl
To help him to shoulder the pain in this world
And if you follow your feelings
And you follow your dreams
You might find the forest there in the trees
Yeah, you’ll be alright, it’s just gonna take time, but now
Who could have seen you’d be so hard to please somehow
You’re just a poor boy a long way from home
You’re just a poor boy a long way from home
And it’s wake up time
Time to open your eyes
And rise and shine
’Cause it’s wake up time
It’s time to open your eyes
And rise and shine
