Always felt I should like this Kinks song more than I actually do. Regarded as one of their more successful later tracks of the 80’s, I love the lyrics and the bittersweet true story behind them (Ray’s big sister who lived in Canada when he was a kid was over on holiday visiting. She had a heart attack while back in England on a night out and basically died on the dance floor, so the very last time he seen her was when she was leaving for the Palais), certainly gives it some emotional weight, but the song is deserving of much better instrumentation. Always disliked the cheap synthy sounding brass keyboard. If they’d replaced that with a proper dancehall brass section, I could live with the ‘pop’iness’ of it all, but as it is it just sounds a bit throwaway. I guess it’s just a victim of it’s time.
