“zombie” - The Cranberries

Another head hangs lowly,
Child is slowly taken.
And the violence caused such silence.
Who are we mistaken?

But you see, it’s not me, it’s not my family.
In your head, in your head they are fighting,
With their tanks and their bombs,
And their bombs and their guns.
In your head, in your head, they are crying…

In your head, in your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie,
Hey, hey, hey. What’s in your head,
In your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie?
Hey, hey, hey, hey, oh, dou, dou, dou, dou, dou…

Another mother’s breakin’
Heart is taking over
When the violence causes silence,
We must be mistaken.

It’s the same old theme since nineteen-sixteen.
In your head, in your head they’re still fighting,
With their tanks and their bombs,
And their bombs and their guns.
In your head, in your head, they are dying…

In your head, in your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie,
Hey, hey, hey. What’s in your head,
In your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie?
Hey, hey, hey, hey, oh, oh, oh,
Oh, oh, oh, oh, hey, oh, ya, ya-a…

“No More Looking Back” - The Kinks

Walking along a crowded street
I see thousands of faces before me.
Then I see a face that I used to know
Long ago in my life story.
It starts me thinking about the things you said
For your image is still inside me.
The past is gone but in my head
You’re still walking along beside me.
Is it something playing tricks with my eyes
Or just an illusion deceiving me,
Or is it someone in a disguise
Or visions of things that used to be?

But lately I’ve been going to
All the places that we once knew,
And just when I think that I am free of you
I keep seeing the things that remind me of you,
And just when I think you’re out of my head
I hear a song that you sang or see a book that you read.
Then you’re in every bar, you’re in every cafe,
You’re driving every car, I see you everyday,
But you’re not really there 'cos you belong to yesterday.

No more looking back,
No more living in the past,
Yesterday’s gone and that’s a fact,
Now there’s no more looking back.
Got to be hard,
Yeah, look straight ahead.
That s the only way it’s going to be,
Yesterday’s gone and that’s a fact,
Now there’s no more looking back,

Perhaps someday I’ll stop needing you,
Then maybe one day I’ll be free of you.
But lately I’ve been going to
All the places that remind me of you.
And just when I think you’re out of my head
I hear a record you played or see a book that you read.
Then you’re in every bar, you’re in every cafe,
You’re driving every car, I see you everyday
But you’re not really there 'cos you belong to yesterday.

No more looking back,
No more living in the past.
Yesterday’s gone, that’s a fact,
Now there’s no more looking back.
No more looking back.
No more living in the past.
Yesterday’s gone, that’s a fact.
Now there’s no more looking back.

A cinq heures, j’étais sorti
Mon père venait me chercher
On voyait Gary Cooper

“A Little Bit Of Abuse” - The Kinks

One on the nose, one on the chin,
You bruise so easy, so why stay with him?
He uses you just like a human punching bag.
But you don’t complain, you’re too scared to speak.
Anyway, it only really hurts you when you laugh,
And when you eat.
But you can’t break the pattern, week after week.
The bruises show,
But he must be special otherwise you’d just get up and go.
You’ll never let us know
Exactly how you feel.
What’s the use, the cynics say it’s no excuse,
You keep running back just to get a little bit of abuse.
You say it’s okay,
But I say that it’s not right.
You wind him up, but you’re living in fear,
You keep going back but it ends in tears, oh.

That’s quite a cut on the side of your head.
Is it from his fist, or did you really fall out of bed?
Oh, so uncouth,
Excuse me, is this your tooth?
Why do you stay, no one knows.
Do you really love him, or are you too scared to go?
You’re always nervous and on the edge of tears.
You cry alone,
But you never tell us what it’s like when you get back home.
No one will ever know
Because you never show.
What’s the use,
Everyone says you’ve got no excuse,
You keep running back just to get a little bit of abuse.
You say it’s okay,
But I say that it’s not right.
Oh, it’s your secret, it’s your life, who am I to criticize?
It takes two sides to know it’s true,
And maybe, he’ll stay in love with you.
No one will ever know,
Because you never show.

“The Company” - Fish

I don’t remember if I posted it yet but if I didn’t,it is a terrible mistake

Where beggars take cheques and children steal credit cards
From the pockets of wrecks that lie in the road
I came to in my future that was just yesterday
Unsure of my past, that’s a knot in my gut

You buy me a drink then you think that you’ve got the right
To crawl in my head and rifle my soul
You tell me I’m free then you want me to compromise
To sell out my dreams you say you’ll make it worthwhile

Oh, boys would you drink to me now
Here on the hill, halfway up, halfway down

You tell me I’m drunk then you sit back and smug a while
Convinced that you’re right that you’re still in command
Of your senses. I laugh at your superior attitude
Your insincere platitudes they make me throw up

The sooner you realize I’m perfectly happy
If I’m left to decide the company I choose

Oh, boys would you drink to me now
Here on the hill, halfway up, halfway down
Oh, boys would you drink to me now
Here on the hill, halfway up, halfway down
Oh for the company born to the company
Live for the company until I die

The sooner you realize I’m perfectly happy
If I’m left to decide the company I choose

The company I choose is solidly singular
Totally trustworthy, straight and sincere
Polished, experienced, witty and charming
So why don’t you push off, this company’s my own

Oh, boys would you drink to me now
Here on the hill, halfway up, halfway down
Oh, boys would you drink to me now
Here on the hill, halfway up, halfway down
Oh for the company, dream of the company
Live for the company until I die
Oh for the company, dream of the company
Drink to the company until we die
Until we die
Until we die

Still one of my favourite Marillion tracks, and lyrics. Stunning…

“Cinderella Search” - Marillion

On the rebound, fumbling all the lines
The light at the end of the bottle - alcoholic alphabet
Through the looking glass the proof in my own reflection
Five senses down and reeling on the Cinderella search
On the rebound, fumbling all the lines
Decay on the vertical hold with a horizontal aim
Conversation needs translation
Three dimensions down dissolving on the Cinderella search, Cinderella search

On the rebound, fumbling all the lines
Dreaming bartenders, bourbon and saxophone
Out of luck, out of charm, out the game of rejections in a cigarette city
Only courting the homing of direction on the Cinderella search, Cinderella search

But the Samaritan of the heartbroken, heartbroken
Swam through the nicotine seize, and we exchanged the kiss of life
Resurrection in a trance, the model, the Grail, in a Marquee of promises
I touched the dream, I hold the dream, I have the dream
To end the Cinderella search, Cinderella search, oh no more, no more!

Exposing bedside manners on a work extension
Awaiting development with paranoid Polaroid eyes, Polaroid eyes

The footman memorised the number
But the prince still holds both the slippers
And would you leave a palace for a bedsit
And Canterbury Tales, Canterbury Tales?

Maybe it was infatuation or the thrill of the chase
Maybe you were always beyond my reach and my heart was playing safe
But was that love in your eye I saw or the reflection of mine?
I’ll never really know for sure, you never really gave me time
Give me time, won’t you give me that time!

Welcome back to the circus
Welcome back to the circus
Welcome back to the circus

I always use the cue sheets but never the nets
Always the cue sheets but never the nets
Never the nets, never the nets
Nevertheless, nevertheless, nevertheless, nevertheless, nevertheless

Welcome back to the circus!

"Brainwashed" - The Kinks

You look like a real human being
But you don’t have a mind of your own
Yeah, you can talk, you can breathe
You can work, you can stitch, you can sew
But you’re brainwashed
Yes you are, yes you are
Get down on your knees
You’ve got a job and a house
And a wife, and your kids and a car
Yeah, you’re conditioned to be
What they want you to be
And be happy to be where you are
Yes you are
Get down on your knees
Get down on your knees

The aristocrats and bureaucrats
Are dirty rats
For making you what you are
They’re up there and you re down here
You’re on the ground and they’re up with the stars
All your life they’ve kicked you around and pushed you around
Till you can’t take any more
To them you’re just a speck of dirt
But you don’t want to get up off the floor
Mister you’re just brainwashed
They give you social security
Tax saving benefits that grow at maturity
Yeah, you’re content just to be
What they want you to be
And to do what they want you to
Yes you are, yes you are
Get down on your knees

there are some great lyrics from MOE (Eels) , on the old forum I quoted PS You Rock My World as one of my favourite lyrics.

Sometimes think that listening to Ray Davies lyrics is a bit like reading George Orwell. Very political, social commentary. Often bleak and focusing on the mundanity of life, but always with faint hopes of something better…

“In This Place” - Big Country

All the years I worked in this place
The friends that I knew here, I loved every face
I loved the smoke the heat and the noise
But the profits too small for the black suited boys

Oh angel, it’s coming down stone by stone
It’s breaking up home by home
Take it away, take it away, take it

In this place I will lay my life down
In this place I will let you carry me
As I age so my learning grows
I still touch the vision
I still smell the rose in this place

All the years I lived in this place
The people we knew here, I loved every face
I love the parties, the funerals and fights
But a supermarket needs the land
And I have no rights

Oh angel, it’s coming down stone by stone
It’s breaking up home by home
Take it away, take it away, take it

In this place I will lay my life down
In this place I will let you carry me
As I age so my learning grows
I still touch the vision
I still smell the rose in this place

All the years I spent in this place
The children I raised here, I love every face
I love this country, the land of my birth
How much am I wanted, how much am I worth

Oh angel, it’s coming down stone by stone
It’s breaking up home by home
Take it away, take it away, take it

In this place I will lay my life down
In this place I will let you carry me
As I age so my learning grows
I still touch the vision
I still smell the rose

In this place I will lay my life down
In this place I will let you carry me
As I age so my learning grows
I still touch the vision
I still smell the rose in this place

‘Blind’ - The Icicle Works

There’s a dead girl by the roadside
There’s a black man on the ground
Tarred and feathered by the wayside
Words of protest just rebound

Am I so blind I cannot see?
Am I so blind I cannot see?
Am I so blind I cannot see?
Am I so blind I cannot see?

There’s a dealer on the corner
There’s a junkie on the street
There’s an actor in the White House
The high rise towers sit like vultures waiting

Am I so blind I cannot see?
Am I so blind I cannot see?
Am I so blind I cannot see?
Am I so blind I cannot see?

Am I so blind I cannot see?
Am I so blind I cannot see?

Is there method in a madness?
Is there reason to believe?
Will the innocent find their freedom?
It’s harder to come clean than it is to deceive, yeah

Am I so blind I cannot see?
Am I so blind I cannot see? I cannot see, yeah
Am I so blind I cannot see? I cannot see, I cannot see
Am I so blind I cannot see? I cannot see, yeah, sweet Jesus
Am I so blind I cannot see? I cannot see, yeah

Not everyone might be a Kinks fan, but I think we can all relate to this as music lovers!

“A Rock ‘N’ Roll Fantasy” - The Kinks

Hello you, hello me, hello people we used to be
Isn’t it strange, we never changed
We’ve been through it all yet we’re still the same
And I know it’s a miracle we still go, and for all we know
We might still have a way to go

Hello me, hello you, you say you want out
Want to start anew, throw in your hand
Break up the band, start a new life, be a new man
But for all we know, we might still have a way to go
Before you go, there’s something you ought to know

There’s a guy in my block, he lives for rock
He plays records day and night
And when he feels down he puts some rock ‘n’ roll on
And it makes him feel alright
And when he feels the world is closing in
He turns his stereo way up high

He just spends his life living in a rock ‘n’ roll fantasy
He just spends his life living on the edge of reality
He just spends his life in a rock ‘n’ roll fantasy
He just spends his life living in a rock ‘n’ roll fantasy
He just spends his life living on the edge of reality
He just spends his life in a rock ‘n’ roll fantasy
He just spends his life living in a rock ‘n’ roll fantasy

Look at me, look at you
You say we’ve got nothing left to prove
The King is dead, rock is done
You might be through but I’ve just begun
I don’t know, I feel free and I won’t let go
Before you go, there’s something you ought to know

Dan is a fan and he lives for our music
It’s the only thing that gets him by
He’s watched us grow and he’s seen all our shows
He’s seen us low and he’s seen us high
Oh, but you and me keep thinking
That the world’s just passing us by

Don’t want to spend my life living in a rock ‘n’ roll fantasy
Don’t want to spend my life living on the edge of reality
Don’t want to waste my life hiding away anymore
Don’t want to spend my life living in a rock ‘n’ roll fantasy

“Waiting In The Weeds” - The Eagles

It’s comin’ on the end of August
Another summer’s promise almost gone
And though I heard some wise man say
That every dog will have his day
He never mentioned that these dog days get so long

I don’t know when I realized the dream was over
Well, there was no particular hour, no given day
You know, it didn’t go down in flame
There was no final scene, no frozen frame
I just watched it slowly fade away

And I’ve been waiting in the weeds
Waiting for my time to come around again and
Hope is floating on the breeze
Carrying my soul high up above the ground and
I’ve been keepin’ to myself
Knowin’ that the seasons are slowly changing
Even though you’re with somebody else
He’ll never love you like I do

I’ve been biding time with the crows and sparrows
While peacocks prance and strut upon the stage
If finding love is just a dance
Proximity and chance
You will excuse me if I skip the masquerade

And I’ve been waiting in the weeds
Waiting for the dust to settle down along the
Back roads running through the fields
Lying on the outskirts of this lonesome town
And I imagine sunlight in your hair
You’re at the county fair

You’re holding hands and laughing
And now the ferris wheel has stopped
You’re swinging on the top
Suspended there with him

And he’s the darling of the chic
The flavor of the week is melting
Down your pretty summer dress
Baby, what a mess you’re making

I’ve been stumbling through some dark places
Now I’m following the plow
I know I’ve fallen out of your good graces
It’s alright now

And I’ve been waiting in the weeds
Waiting for the summer rain to fall upon the
Wild birds scattering the seeds
Answering the calling of the tide’s eternal tune
The phases of the moon
The chambers of the heart
The egg and dart of small gray
Spiders spinning in the dark
In spite of all the times the web is torn apart

And I’ve been waiting in the weeds
Waiting for the time to come around again and
Hope is floating on the breeze
Carrying my soul high up above the ground and
I’ve been keeping to myself
Knowing that the seasons are slowly changing
Even though you’re with somebody else
He’ll never love you like I do

“romeo and juliet” - Dire Straits

A lovestruck Romeo sings a streetsuss a serenade
Laying everybody low with a love song that he made
Finds a streetlight, steps out of the shade
Says something like, “You and me babe—how 'bout it?”

Juliet says, "Hey it’s Romeo. You nearly gimme a heart attack"
He’s underneath the window; she’s singing, “Hey, la, my boyfriend’s back.
You shouldn’t come around here singing up at people like that.
Anyway what you gonna do about it?”

Juliet, the dice was loaded from the start
And I bet, then you exploded in my heart
And I forget, I forget the movie song
When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong, Juliet?

Come up on different streets, they both were streets of shame
Both dirty, both mean, yes, and the dream was just the same
And I dreamed your dream for you and now your dream is real
How can you look at me as if I was just another one of your deals?

When you can fall for chains of silver you can fall for chains of gold
You can fall for pretty strangers and the promises they hold
You promised me everything, you promised me thick and thin, yeah.
Now you just say, “Oh Romeo, yeah. You know, I used to have a scene with him.”

Juliet, when we made love you used to cry
You said, "I love you like the stars above, I’ll love you 'til I die."
There’s a place for us, you know the movie song
When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong, Juliet?

I can’t do the talks like they talk on the TV
And I can’t do a love song like the way it’s meant to be
I can’t do everything but I’ll do anything for you
I can’t do anything except be in love with you

And all I do is miss you and the way we used to be
All I do is keep the beat, the bad company
All I do is kiss you through the bars of a rhyme
Julie, I’d do the stars with you any time

Juliet, when we made love you used to cry
You said, "I love you like the stars above, I’ll love you 'til I die."
There’s a place for us, you know the movie song
When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong, Juliet?

And a lovestruck Romeo sings a streetsuss a serenade
Laying everybody low with a love song that he made
Find a convenient streetlight, steps out of the shade
And says something like, “You and me babe—how 'bout it?”

“You and me babe—how about it?”

"Pilgrim’s Progress" - Procol Harum

I sat me down to write a simple story
which maybe in the end became a song
In trying to find the words which might begin it
I found these were the thoughts I brought along
At first I took my weight to be an anchor
and gathered up my fears to guide me round
but then I clearly saw my own delusion
and found my struggles further bogged me down
In starting out I thought to go exploring
and set my foot upon the nearest road
In vain I looked to find the promised turning
but only saw how far I was from home
In searching I forsook the paths of learning
and sought instead to find some pirate’s gold
In fighting I did hurt those dearest to me
and still no hidden truths could I unfold
I sat me down to write a simple story
which maybe in the end became a song
The words have all been writ by one before me
We’re taking turns in trying to pass them on
Oh, we’re taking turns in trying to pass them on

“le portrait” - Calogero

Il mélange au fond de sa tasse
Du miel
Il regarde par le vasistas
Le ciel
A chaque fois que passe un avion
Il se dit que c’est peut-être elle
Qui passe au-dessus de sa maison
On lui a dit qu’elle était au ciel

Il rêve couché sur un parquet
Dans les bras de sa mère
Dessinée à la craie
Tous les soirs en secret
Ce dessin il le fait
Trait pour trait
À partir d’un portrait

Il rêve couché sur un parquet
Dans les bras de sa mère
Dessinée à la craie
Tous les soirs en secret
Ce dessin il le fait
Trait pour trait
À partir d’un portrait

Perdu au fond de sa classe
Il s’emmêle
Il se débat avec le coriace
Pluriel
Puis il explique à sa maitresse

Pourquoi “parent” ne prend pas d’"s"
Des câlins il en voudrait tellement
Ne serait-ce qu’un par an

Il rêve couché sur un parquet
Dans les bras de sa mère
Dessinée à la craie
Tous les soirs en secret
Ce dessin il le fait
Trait pour trait
À partir d’un portrait
